Murchison: Boyfriend assaults nurse, shoots man, then himself

2011-11-22 00:00

A MURCHISON man is fighting for his life at the King Edward Hospital in Durban after he shot and killed a man and then turned the gun on himself.

The suspect killed an out-of-town contract worker at the nurses’ quarters in Murchison Hospital in the early hours of Friday morning.

Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid said the suspect and his girlfriend got into an argument on Thursday evening. “He beat his girlfriend up with a beer bottle and injured her. She then went to the Murchison Hospital.”

Later that night the suspect went to his girlfriend’s relatives’ house and took a gun. He fetched a .303 rifle from the house, which belonged to a deceased uncle, and went to the hospital.”

The suspect crawled through a hole in the fence and entered the nursing quarters area where temporary houses were put up for contract workers.

“He called the victim by name and when he appeared in the window he [the suspect] shot him in the chest.”

The victim, whose identity has not yet been released, died on the scene. “When the suspect saw the police cars coming towards the hospital he turned the gun on himself,” said Wiid. The man shot and seriously wounded himself in the face. He was transferred to the King Edward Hospital yesterday after his condition worsened.
