Murder: Youth (17) recounts stabbing incident in court

2012-01-24 00:00

A 17-YEAR-OLD Woodlands youth has described how a conversation which began as a simple request for a cigarette, ended in his stabbing a man to death.

The youth will be sentenced after the high court has considered a probation officer’s report.

The trial was postponed to February 6 for that purpose by Judge Anton van Zyl yesterday.

The youth pleaded guilty to the murder of Sibusiso Sithole in Hickory Road in Woodlands on January 14 this year.

In a statement read to court by his legal aid attorney, Ishi Khan, the youth said he and a friend were on their way to Woodlands from Woodlands extension after “consuming a few quarts of beer” when they came across Sithole.

Sithole was known to his friend, who asked him for a cigarette.

Sithole allegedly responded by swearing and an argument developed.

His friend hit Sithole with an empty beer bottle and Sithole then threatened to kill both of them.

“When I asked the deceased [Sithole] why he was threatening me even though I had not assaulted him he replied he would hit me because I was in cahoots with [my friend],” he said.

The teenager said he became incensed when Sithole began insulting him and making derogatory remarks about his mother.

“I drew a knife that was in my possession and I used it to stab the deceased. The deceased turned away from me while I was in the process of stabbing him, such that it resulted in my stabbing the deceased in his back.”

He said he fled and went home and only later discovered that Sithole had collapsed and died of his injuries.
