Murder suspect handed to police

2010-11-30 00:00

A MURDER suspect is in a serious condition under police guard in a Pietermaritzburg hospital after community members assaulted him following a death of a man in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The 25-year-old man was handed over to the police by the angry people who had assaulted him after he allegedly shot and killed Menzi Mncube (36) during a robbery. He allegedly took Mncube’s licensed firearm and a DVD player in Snathing outside Edendale at about 12.30 am.

Neighbours who heard a gunshot inside Mncube’s house hunted down the suspect and found him drinking in a local tavern with the stolen weapon in his possession.

“It is alleged that the community thereafter dragged the suspect out of the tavern and assaulted him with sticks and stones, seriously wounding him,” said police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joey Jeevan.

Jeevan said Mncube, who lived alone, was asleep when the murder suspect broke in and confronted him.

It is believed that Mncube tried to put up a fight and then to flee.

However, the attacker shot him in the neck and stomach.

Jeevan said the suspect, who will be charged with murder as soon as he is discharged, will appear in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court shortly.
