Murder: tow truck owner, driver appear in court

2014-07-25 00:00

A TOW truck owner and his driver made a brief appearance in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court yesterday for the murder of a rival tow truck operator.

The owner of Mr Towing, Prasheem Ramnarayan (27) and his driver, Gitesh Ragunatha (19), both from Howick West, made a brief appearance charged with the murder of Virendhra Dewcharan. It’s alleged that they used a golf club in brutally assaulting Dewcharan on the night of June 18 in Hilton. This resulted from a dispute between them over who would tow a car that was involved in an accident.

Dewcharan was hospitalised and died at St Anne’s Hospital on July 8.

According to a source close to the investigation, Ramnarayan and Ragunatha opened a case at Hilton police station, alleging they were assaulted by Dewcharan.

A source said that on the night of the incident the Mr Towing vehicle arrived first at the accident scene and Dewcharan’s Mgeni towing vehicle thereafter. There was a heated argument over who should tow the car and it was decided by the police and the vehicle’s owner that Mr Towing get the job.

State prosecutor Rene Padayachee asked the court to remand the men in custody for an identification parade to be held.

They will be back in court on July 29.
