Murray Cup sees some heart-stopping rugby

2014-08-11 00:00

IT was make or break stuff in local club rugby as Premier Division sides visited First Division teams in the qualifying round of the Murray Cup on Saturday.

The knockout tournament served up one upset as Zululand Rhinos were beaten by Richards Bay in the dying moments of the game.

College Rovers faced a tough test in Sydenham as they took on Jaguars. The game was somewhat stop-start with Jaguars proving difficult to crack, especially in loose play. However, Rovers had the ascendency at the set piece and managed to run out winners.

As would be expected from the newly crowned Moor Cup winners, Durban Collegians made easy work of Harlequins in the Bluff while Varsity College ran out comfortable winners against Newcastle Highlanders. Meanwhile UKZN Impi put Piet Retief to the sword in a high-scoring encounter.

Amanzimtoti made a big statement beating Vryheid away from home. Despite conceding some points, Toti bagged an easy win to progress to the next round.

Northwood Crusaders faced a potentially difficult encounter against South Coast Warriors but the visitors managed to win, even though the score line was close.

Lastly Pietermaritzburg Collegians caused an upset when they beat Hillcrest by one point to progress to the next round.
