Muscle power: Skonk Nicholson’s Valiant gets a rugby team lift

2013-05-23 00:00

HOW do you get an old Valiant onto a stage? You push it.

Or rather, you use the strongest high school rugby players available to do the grunt work for you.

That’s what Maritzburg College Old Boys Association president Kevin Trodd did.

Seated in the driver’s seat, he had the boys from the second and third rugby teams huff and puff while pushing the car up a ramp and onto the stage in the school’s Alan Paton Hall. The car, which belonged to famed College rugby coach Skonk Nicholson, will go under the hammer at the annual College Old Boys’ Reunion dinner taking place tomorrow.

Trodd told The Witness that they had already received a number of bids for the car. But for obvious reasons he could not disclose them.

Getting the car into the hall was also a big task, although not on the same level as getting it on stage.

“We drove it in. There was about a gap of 10 mm between the car and the door on either side,” said Trodd, adding that they had to remove the handles from the double doors leading into the hall.

The old car held mystical allure for the boys. Second team flanker Gavin Geach said whenever they saw the late Skonk driving around, they’d raise their hand to the legendary former first team coach.

In the boot of Skonk’s car, Trodd said, was an old rugby ball and an old cricket bat. “He didn’t use the bat to play cricket. He probably used it to discipline the boys.”

Also in the boot was an old geography textbook written by Skonk, called Man’s World, which Trodd remembered using in his school days.
