'Music madness': pupils' project wins award

2010-11-22 00:00

NEWS of musical madness has been music to the ears of pupils at a primary school in the midlands that will have their own specialist music centre, thanks to the boys of Michaelhouse.

Every year, grade 10 pupils at Michaelhouse are encouraged to submit ideas as part of a Peter Brown award. The late Peter Brown was a Michaelhouse old boy and respected activist in the country’s liberation struggle.

It was two pupils’ idea of bringing “musical madness” to the Crystal Spring Primary School in Lidgetton through the creation of a specialist music centre that won the trophy this year.

Michaelhouse boys bought a six-metre shipping container and delivered it to the school.

The container was cleaned up and painted in preparation for the arrival of five djembe drums and five marimbas.

Melanie Wester, the director of marketing at Michaelhouse, said music pupils from the college will visit Crystal Springs regularly to teach pupils there how to play the instruments in order for the “musical madness” concept to live on.
