Mystery: Death of PMB singer after attack

2012-01-23 00:00

THE circumstances that led to the death last week of well-known Carnatic singer Billy Roy Pillay remain a mystery to his family.

Pillay spent three months in hospital after being found on October 16 last year, lying in a pool of blood in Polurar Road, Northdale. He was badly beaten and had suffered injuries to his head.

His son, Sherwin, said his father had been confused and showed a “complete memory loss” about the hours before he was found. “My father left home saying he was going to see the game between Liverpool and Manchester United on the big screen in one of the local taverns,” he said.

“My dad was a die-hard Manchester United fan.”

Billy Roy Pillay was rushed to Northdale Hospital and then transferred to Albert Luthuli Hospital in Durban for brain surgery. Later he returned to Pietermaritzburg, first to Grey’s and then to Northdale.

“We prayed and hoped that he would recollect the events of that night and give us some clues of what happened and who the perpetrator, or perpetrators were,” said Sherwin.

Police spokesperson, Lieutenant Joey Jeevan, said that initially the matter was reported as an assault. Meanwhile, anyone with information on the attack on Billy Roy Pillay is asked to call Mountain Rise police station on 033 387 9600.
