N2: five killed in speeding car

2009-04-24 00:00

FIVE men were killed when the Opel Astra they were travelling in was rear-ended by another vehicle on the N2 on the north coast yesterday morning.

The driver of the second vehicle, a Land Rover, is in a serious condition in hospital after she drove into the back of the Astra.

Both vehicles were headed north towards Empangeni when a traffic officer flagged down the Astra at the Nyoni River bridge.

KZN Transport Community Safety and Liaison spokeswoman Nonkululeko Mbatha said traffic officers were conducting a speed enforcement exercise. “One officer in full uniform and wearing a reflective jacket stopped the Astra, which had exceeded the speed limit and was travelling at 150 km/h. The Astra was followed by a Land Rover … which crashed into the rear of the Astra.”

Netcare 911 spokesman Chris Botha said both vehicles were wrecked beyond repair.

“All five occupants in the Astra died on the scene due to the severity of injuries they sustained.”

The driver of the Land Rover sustained serious injuries. Paramedics stabilised her and took her to hospital for further treatment, he added.
