N3 crash: Engine on way to fetch driver

2009-09-30 00:00

THE fire engine that crashed on the N3 near Balgowan on Monday morning was “on its way to the Howick fire station to pick up a driver who needed to be at Mooi River fire station”, uMgungundlovu District municipal manager Sibusiso Khuzwayo said yesterday.

He said the Mooi River station is too understaffed to respond to emergencies at any given time.

Two firefighters were injured in the accident. The driver, Stephen Merryweather, and Constance Zimu were reported to be in a critical but stable condition in hospital yesterday.

The R1,5-million, 3 000-litre capacity fire engine crashed on the freeway on Monday morning. The vehicle was travelling towards Howick when the driver lost control and the vehicle crashed.

Responding to questions sent by The Witness on whether speed was the cause of the accident, Khuzwayo said it is too early to determine the speed at which the vehicle was travelling as that is a subject of an investigation to be conducted by accident specialists from their insurers. — WR.
