N3 crash: One dead, four injured as trucks collide on Town Hill

2012-09-21 00:00

A TRUCK driver was killed and four people were injured when two articulated trucks collided on the N3 southbound carriageway on Town Hill between the Peter Brown Drive and Chatterton Road off-ramps early yesterday morning.

The accident and the recovery of the wreckage forced complete road closure and caused traffic delays for most of the day.

Trucks were stacked in a tailback as far as Merrivale and were being slowly released during the late afternoon.

ER24 spokesperson André Visser said on colliding, both trucks left the road. “Both trucks then veered off the highway and down an embankment. The rear truck was transporting a full load of cotton and caught fire shortly after coming to a standstill.

“The driver of the truck was trapped in the wreckage and had died in the fire. Two passengers managed to escape from the cab prior to it catching fire. Both men sustained minor injuries only in the form of scrapes and bruises, as well as suspected back and neck injuries,” Visser said.

He added that the driver and passenger of the other truck were also injured and all were taken to hospital. Emergency services at the scene said the fire kept flaring up throughout the morning.
