TWO National Freedom Party (NFP) organisers were ambushed and killed yesterday while on their way home from a party meeting in Northern KwaZulu-Natal.

Bongani Shelembe, a businessman and NFP constituency chairperson from Msinga, and youth secretary Zamo Zondi were on their way from a constituency meeting at about 5 pm, said NFP national secretary-general Professor Nhlanhla Khubisa. In the attack another party member, Thulephi Mbatha, was seriously injured.

“We are appealing to anyone with information to please contact the police,” he said.

The three were travelling in Shelembe’s white Mercedes Benz on the R53 between Greytown and Dundee in the Msangeni area when they were attacked by four people.

Police spokesperson Colonel Joey Jeevan confirmed the incident.

“They were attacked by four unknown persons. One AK47 cartridge was found on the scene. The motive is not known at this point,” she said, adding her voice to the appeal for information.
