Nagle Dam to host top paddlers

2008-04-26 00:00

Nagle Dam is again the venue for the country’s premier sprinting event, with KZN hosting the 2008 South African Champioships there this weekend.

All the top paddlers from around the land will be present and with most of the major trials behind them, they will have the freedom to race in as many events as possible without the constraint of having to concentrate on their favourite trial event. Racing is over three days with the 1 000 metres straight races today along with the 3 000 metres long-distance races for Men’s K1 and Women’s K2.

Tomorrow there are all the 500 metres straight races and the opposite 3 000 metres races and finally all the 200 metres straight races on Monday. Racing begins at 9 am each day with the mornings taken up with mostly heats and semi-finals and the major finals taking place from midday onwards.

Having entered every event on the schedule, Shaun Rubenstein will be the man to beat for the Victor Ludorum in the senior men’s category with his main challenges coming from Michael Arthur, Nick Burden and Ant Stott.

All the Olympic qualifiers in the women’s category have also entered and the tussle for top spot will almost certainly come from K1 rivals Jen Hodson and Bridgette Hartley, with the final battle for the 500 metres spot in Beijing still to be decided.

With a race each at the trials last weekend, Stuart Waterworth and Grant van der Walt will be the main rivals in the boys’ category, as will Bianca Beavitt and Vicky Chiazzari in the girls’.

With strong teams entered from both KZN and Gauteng, the provincial title will certainly be decided between these two provinces. The KZN team is as follows.

Senior and U21 Men: Michael Arthur, Brent Chiazzari, Scott Humphry, Cam Schoeman, Ant Stott, Nic Stubbs, Dean Chiazzari, Chris Couve, Chris Muller. Women Senior and U21: Abie Adie, Vicky Chiazzari, Lizzy Chiazzari, Michele Eder, Kelly Howe, Tiffany Kruger, Sarah Hook. Boys U18: Darren Berriman, Ben Biggs, Clint Cook, Stuart McLaren, Matt Shaw, Stuart Waterworth, Gregor Martin, Luke Chalupsky. Girls U18: Vicky Chiazzari, Lindsay Davis, Lauren Felagte, Emma Horner, Tori Neal, Jenna Ward. Master Class Men: Attila Adrovicz(Capt), Bart Fokkens, Nigel Briggs, Colin Burden, Bernard Kimble, Mike de Villiers. Master Class Women: Marge Kimble and Merrill King. Manager: Rob Humphry
