Nando's bribe Mexico not to flame grill Bafana

2010-06-10 00:00

NANDO’S Chicken franchises will be offering free lunch to members of the Mexican team and all their supporters if the South American side suffer defeat at the hands of Bafana tomorrow.

Mexico will be up against a nation united when they meet Bafana at Soccer City, and Nando’s marketing manager Sepanta Bagherpour says the initiative is indicative of the company’s support for Bafana.

“We will do everything in our power to make sure that our boys get as far as they can in the tournament,” he said.

The “deal” falls in line with the recent television advertising campaign that has seen the restaurant chain play on common “misconceptions” that foreigners may have about South Africa.

The advert reads: “Dear Mexican Players. Most foreigners think SA is rife with bribery and corruption. To live up to your misconceptions, we’re offering you and your spectators a free lunch if you lose on Friday.”

If Mexico lose, people with Mexican passports will be able to go into any Nando’s branch countrywide and be treated to a free lunch between 2 pm and 5 pm. A valid Mexican passport will need to be shown at the counter.

One can only hope that come Saturday, Mexicans countrywide will enjoy the taste of flame-grilled chicken, while South Africans delight in the far sweeter taste of victory.
