National Health Insurance will boost KZN’s profile

2014-10-06 00:00

KWAZULU-NATAL is going to be a leading province when the government starts rolling out the National Health Insurance, Deputy Health Minister Dr Joe Phaahla said on Friday.

Phaahla who visited the preferred clinics for NHI — Phatheni Clinic in Richmond, Mbalenhle Clinic and Edendale Hospital — said he was impressed with the progress in these facilities.

He told media that KZN is piloting NHI in three districts. “uMgungundlovu and uMzinyathi were identified by national Department of Health and Amajuba District was identified by provincial Department of Health looking at its size and interesting mix of rural and urban area, disease profile, and the demographics.”

He said this is a pilot phase in these districts and infrastructural factors such as the availability of space, the maintenance and repair of buildings, the provision of essential equipment and medicines shows huge progress.

“If everything goes well, we will be implementing it by June next year,” he said.

“I am impressed with improvements in Phatheni Clinic, as it was rated 49% two years ago and now it is at 78%.”

KZN Health MEC Dr Sibongise Dhlomo accompanied Phaahla.
