National rugby weeks begin today

2012-07-02 00:00

TWO National school rugby weeks begin this morning. The Coca Cola Academy Week has U18 boys who did not make the Craven Week teams playing one another over three matches in Wellington and they are likely to have at least one game in the wet.

The other is the Grant Khomo Week for U16 players from each of the provinces.

The three games are being played today, tomorrow and on Thursday as with the Academy week.

KwaZulu-Natal will play against the Pumas as the opening fixture at 10 am today at the University of Johannesburg Stadium.

There are 20 teams from 16 rugby provinces, plus two country district teams from Border and Griquas. Both Namibia and Zimbabwe also send teams to this week.

At the Academy week the sides will consist of at least 11 players from previously disadvantaged backgrounds and no more than 11 from privileged backgrounds.

There are 26 teams that will be playing in the week.

There are 13 teams from the rugby provinces plus a team from each of Limpopo and Namibia.

The Falcons supply two zonal teams from their region and seven provinces, including KwaZulu-Natal, have selected a side from their country district schools.

An SA LSEN team selected at the end of their week last Thursday is also included and to even up the teams, Boland, the host province, have a second side selected.

The current Springbok captain played in the Academy week in 1999 and he was not selected for the SA Academy XV.

Players must not see this as the culmination of their rugby, but continue playing at tertiary and club level and with determination their rugby can go further.

KZN have previously had two Academy sides selected and a step in the right direction now includes a Country District side instead of the second Academy team. The first match today for the latter is against Leopards Country Districts. The KZN Academy team play SWD.

The SA School selectors will be present identifying the better players to take part in trials, together with palyers from Craven week, to select an SA Schools U18 team to play three Tests in August.
