Ndebele’s state of province address probably his last

2008-02-11 00:00

KwaZulu-Natal Premier S’bu Ndebele will probably deliver his last state of the province speech tomorrow, since his decision not to stand for the position of ANC provincial chairman. This means that, like President Thabo Mbeki, he has 14 months in office until the 2009 election.

Indications are that, at the KwaZulu-Natal’s elective conference in May, the new chairman will be Finance and Economic Development MEC Dr Zweli Mkhize, which puts him in line to become the province’s premier.

Commentators believe this will be an important address for Ndebele, who will remind the province of achievements under his premiership. This will include KwaZulu-Natal’s growing economy, which has become the second best performing in the country, after Gauteng.

They also expect him to announce measures geared at leaving his mark on the province. Ndebele’s spokesman, Logan Maistry, said the premier will talk on plans to deal with corruption in the civil service as well as steps to improve service delivery and get the province working effectively.
