Ndulula ecstatic after Bafana call-up

2014-08-23 00:00

WHEN Weekend Witness called AmaZulu striker Bongani Ndulula yesterday to ask how he felt about being selected for the national squad for the first time in his career, he had not yet heard the news. After a few seconds of silence, it began to sink in, and Ndulula’s reaction was one of ecstasy.

“I’ve just finished training [with AmaZulu], I haven’t heard a thing,” a stunned Ndulula finally said in between a series of child-like giggles. “I wasn’t expecting this. I’m just so happy. I’ve been waiting for this for a very long time. It is every player’s dream to play for their country.”

As it turns out, AmaZulu’s technical team had received an e-mail from Safa yesterday morning saying that the 24-year-old had been called up. But nobody mentioned it to the man it affected most, instead leaving him to find out on his own.

“It is really good news and we’re all very happy for him,” the club’s media officer Brilliant Mkhathini said.

Nicknamed “Drogba”, Ndulula comes with a reputation that he manufactured for himself during his time at Orlando Pirates between 2010-2013, but he hasn’t always lived up to that billing.

But coach Shakes Mashaba clearly sees something in Usuthu’s number nine, and Ndulula will have his chance to impress.

“I’ve worked with Shakes when I was in the U23s, but I have not spoken to him in a long time and I didn’t know he was looking at me,” Ndulula said. “These games coming up are very important and the national team, I mean we, want to go all the way through to Afcon.”
