‘Nerdy’ school produces stars

2015-01-06 00:00

THE aptly named Star College has produced two stars of the 2014 matric exams in KwaZulu-Natal who scored 10 distinctions each.

Shivanan Pillay and Veshalin Naidoo may just be tomorrow’s rocket scientists of the finance world with both hoping to head off to the University of Cape Town to study actuarial science. The youngsters said they had approached their final year differently to achieve their success.

“I like to assess risk and I used this thinking in preparing myself for the finals. I made sure I analysed the risk in my study routine and made sure I didn’t burn out,” said Pillay.

Naidoo admitted that he is a procrastinator. “Now I know that I should have done better. I planned my study routine, but did not keep to it and found myself studying late. On three separate nights, I did not sleep,” he said.

Both said they had initially had reservations about going to Durban’s Star College, believing it to be “nerdy” with pupils “buried in their calculators”, but now believe it was the school for them.

They thanked deputy head Uger Patli for his help and support and their teachers for the multitude of extra lessons.

“Mr Patli played a big role in my success. He made sure I was on track and focused on results, as did my parents and my brother who matriculated a year earlier with nine distinctions,” said Pillay.
