Net scam costs farmer R140?000

2010-08-18 00:00

A PIETERMARITZBURG businessman was shocked to discover last week that he has lost about R140 000 through an Internet scam.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joey Jeevan said the victim, who owns a farm near Hilton College outside Pietermaritzburg, was busy doing his Internet banking on August 10 when he discovered that the money had been withdrawn from his account.

“He then contacted the police about the incident and also contacted his bank’s head office. The case was opened. But it would be difficult to establish where the transfer was made.

“It could have been made anywhere in the country,” said Jeevan.

The businessman is currently out of the country, apparently until September 12.

His colleague, who declined to give his name, said he was not sure how the scam was conducted.

“He just showed me the papers [which indicated the transfer of the money] … but he was very upset about it,” said the colleague.

Jeevan said the police are investigating a case of fraud.
