Netball tourney trophy stays in Pretoria

THE silverware from the Wildeklawer netball tournament will stay in Pretoria for another year, but not with Menlopark, the winners in 2011 and 2012.

Afrikaanse Hoër Meisieskool of Pretoria were crowned champions of the 2013 edition in Pietermaritzburg after defeating Sentraal of Bloemfontein 34-31 in a closely contested final.

This is Affies’ second championship triumph; they won the inaugural netball tournament in 2010.

Menlopark were searching for their third successive title.

Sentraal ended Menlopark’s campaign by beating them 33-32 in the semi-final, while Affies came out on top in their semi-final against Stellenberg with the same score.

The netball of most of the competing schools was of a high standard, with the games enjoyed by vocal spectators in the Indoor centre at Maritzburg College.

Danika Meyer of Menlopark was named the best goalkeeper of the tournament.

Affies claimed more glory as Jana Nel and Jeanthé Strydom were named the best attacking and defending players.
