New 4x4s to deal with water-related crises

2009-10-16 00:00

IN a bid to improve turnaround time in fixing water-related problems, the uMgungundlovu District Municipality has added 14 vehicles to its fleet that will attend to complaints even in remote rural areas.

The new vehicles will be used strictly for water-related services. The district council has been criticised by residents in the past who have had to wait for long periods to have their water complaints attended to.

In some cases the municipality was unable to attend to complaints due to broken down vehicles.

These 4x4 vehicles, fully equipped with satellite-tracking devices, will serve Impendle, Richmond, Umngeni, Umshwathi, Mkhambathini and Mooi Mpofana municipalities.

The new fleet was procured by G-Fleet Operating Model, a government entity based in Gauteng on a full maintenance lease.

Acting strategic executive manager for technical services Bheki Mbambo said the new fleet is a step in the right direction towards efficient service delivery in the district.

Mbambo said the old fleet was no longer able to meet the demands of service delivery in different parts of the municipality, especially the rural areas.

“With this system, G-Fleet will provide full maintenance of the new fleet, while the district will be responsible for paying the monthly operations and rental for each vehicle,” he said.
