New Twenty20 tournament to replace Schools’ Night League

2011-10-25 00:00

KWAZULU-NATAL Inland Cricket Union, together with Sunfoil, introduced a Twenty20 competition for primary and second-tier high schools in October. This replaces the challenge that in the past two years has taken place during the schools’ night league.

Whoever organised the fixtures however, should be ashamed, as they pitted arguably the strongest primary school side, Merchiston, against the development side from Sweetwillow, in the first match. Some of the youngsters from Sweetwillow had never even seen a full- size cricket field let alone played on one. After the annihilation by Merchiston, they will probably never want to play cricket again.

This begs the question of what development has actually occurred over the past 10 years? The 11 youngsters who were on the field had had very little coaching in batting, fielding or bowling. They need to play games of cricket on decent surfaces, and as often as possible.

To be fair there are few facilities in the townships, but what has happened to the money that each union has been given for development?

Laddsworth, in the second game on the first day, also had a very comfortable win against a KZN Invitation XI. If a team from the Edendale area had been invited then they should have played the invitation side.

St Charles Preparatory beat Cordwalles. The other game was washed out between Winterton and Pelham. This will be made up today ahead of the semi-finals.

The first semi-final will be between Laddsworth and St Charles Prep at 3 pm. The second semi-final, at 6 pm, will be between the earlier winner of the game between Pelham and Winterton and Merchiston. The final will be on Thursday at 4.30 pm. This will follow a warm-up match for the Dolphins against KZN Inland starting at 9 am.

The semi-finals of the senior schools challenge will be contested on Wednesday. The first game, at 3 pm, will be between Treverton, who beat Voortrekker and Weston, the winner against Wartburg. The second semi-final will be between the KZN Invitation XI winner against Carter and Howick who beat Alexandra.

The senior final will be on Thursday following the primary school final at 6 pm.

The Oval is the place to be on Thursday as there will be family entertainment with a range of prizes to be won. There will also be prizes for the school that brings in the most fans.
