New ‘Witness’ editor takes over

2010-04-06 00:00

THE new editor of The Witness , Fikile- Moya, has taken over the reins from long-serving editor John Conyngham.

Moya was editor of the Sowetan before his appointment to The Witness on April 1. Born in Soweto, Moya (37) worked at the Star from 1997 to 2003 before moving to the Mail & Guardian, where he was promoted to associate editor, and then the Sowetan.

He has worked as a news writer, arts writer, socio-political columnist and as a sports editor before taking on the editorship of the Sowetan.

Moya is an ardent sports fan, and has commented in his blog on the effect of football on his life. He wrote: “As French author and philosopher Albert Camus once said: ‘All that I know most surely about morality and obligations I owe to football’, I too owe everything I know about life, love and loyalty, pleasure and pain, pride and prejudice to having been a football fan.”

In an address to editorial staff, Moya said that he is proud to be taking over South Africa’s oldest newspaper, and he has a profound respect for the endurance and vitality of a paper that has served its community for 164 years.

“While I respect institutional memory, this must never be an obstacle to meeting the unique challenges that every generation of journalists and editors must face in creating respected and enduring newspapers.”
