New Year’s fireworks stress pets

2008-01-02 00:00

The amount of fireworks used to celebrate the arrival of 2008 in Pietermaritzburg outdid those which were set off for the Millennium celebrations.

The loud explosions once again took their toll on the stressed animals of the city. SPCA spokeswoman Maureen Vida said that many pets were still missing yesterday. She said that the inspector on duty received constant calls from concerned pet owners.

Yesterday morning, there were 17 dogs in the SPCA kennels that had been brought in. “But this figure will rise as many more lost dogs will come in during the day. We don’t find all of them immediately.”

The SPCA summoned the police to close down the operations of a street vendor selling fireworks in Scottsville on Monday afternoon.

She blamed the large amount of fireworks set off at New Year on the fair weather the city experienced on Monday night. “The rain always helps us to control the amount of bangs.”

The SPCA will be making greater efforts this year to have the city’s by-laws reviewed in order to restrict the use of fireworks, Vida said.
