New body to promote self-help farming

2010-10-22 00:00

THE Siyavuna Development Centre (SDC), which promotes sustainable agriculture, will be launched today at the KwaNoitsha Community Hall near Margate.

Jacques Snyman, general manager of SDC, said: “The main aim of the organisation is to eradicate poverty and close the gap between the rich and the poor.”

Snyman said the community development organisation will be focusing on the promotion of a sustainable agri-marketing model that aims to encourage people to become self-sufficient and develop business savvy.

A priority will be to encourage basic income generation at a household level and job creation through the introduction of community- tailored secondary trading co-operatives.

“This motivates people to grow their own food because they will now be getting cash in their hands every time they sell their produce,” he said.

“We offer organic gardening training to people and equip them with the necessary business and marketing tools to become self-sufficient.”

Snyman said the project, which is already under way but becomes official today, involves going into the rural areas to teach the necessary information on the sustainable agri-marketing model.

SDC goes out into the communities, he said, and makes follow-up visits to “encourage people to grow even bigger gardens and expand their businesses”.
