New director impressed with Sharks’ squad

2013-08-06 00:00

BRENDAN Venter, who joined the Sharks for the first time last week, says he is delighted with the state of rugby in the province.

Venter, who is the Sharks’ new director of rugby, addressed a media conference at King’s Park yesterday. He was accompanied by CEO John Smit, and the new coaching staff of Brad Macleod-Henderson and Sean Everitt.

Venter said he was very impressed with the quality of the Sharks players available and the healthy junior structures.

“I’ve worked extensively with many talented players at provinces and clubs in the past, and the Sharks have a really good squad. I’m looking forward to working with them,” he said.

The Sharks’ Currie Cup squad was named yesterday and Smit said he was satisfied with the quality of players available.

“The balance of this squad is important and I hope we will see the benefits of having an older head sitting alongside a 20-year-old who hasn’t played at Currie Cup level yet.

“I’m very happy. I think it’s a great-looking Currie Cup squad with a huge amount of potential.”

Sharks commercial manager Rudolf Straeuli told The Witness that the Du Plessis brothers, Bismarck and Jannie, had renewed their contracts, after widespread speculation that they would be leaving Durban.
