New face in KZN cabinet

2009-07-30 00:00

THE appointment of Bheki Cele as police commissioner has led to a reshuffle of the KZN cabinet, with Willies Mchunu moving from Local Government and Traditional Affairs to Transport, Community Safety and Liaison to replace him, and ANC chief whip Nomsa Dube replacing Mchunu.

Dube was sworn in by KZN Judge President Vuka Tshabalala yesterday.

Dube was speaker in the eThekwini Municipality before becoming the country’s ambassador to the Czech Republic until recently.

After the April election, she was appointed the ANC’s chief whip in the legislature.

Dube grew up in Durban and served as private secretary to the provincial secretariat of the ANC before becoming private secretary to minister of Education and Training Sibusiso Bhengu

She also worked for the National Association of Democratic Lawyers and the Institute for Democracy in South Africa.

In 1995, Dube became chair of the Durban Unicity Committee, a forerunner to the transformation of the old Durban City Council into a non-racial municipal council.

She was mayor of the North-Central Council in 1999 until the formal establishment of the Durban Metropolitan Unicity Council in 2000, and has held an executive position with the SA Local Government Association.
