New hospital for Edendale

2010-06-14 00:00

THE construction of Eden Gardens Private Hospital will commence in the second part of this year.

This was revealed by the chairperson of Edenvision Medical Holdings Limited, Dr Pubie Padayachee, on Friday.

The multi-million rand project, spearheaded by BEE Edenvision, was first announced in April 2008.

Edenvision was formed in 2006 by a group of doctors, among them Dr Bongani Hlatshwayo, the late husband of former Msunduzi mayor Zanele Hlatshwayo.

She acquired her husbands’ shares in the project.

Initially, the Sirius Foundation had made a bid to acquire development rights to the five-hectare site.

The foundation lodged an application for the establishment of an integrated housing development on the land in Edendale.

Edenvision was given preference by the municipality in 2008 after the foundation was reported to have failed to submit a development application within a specified time frame.

Dr Padayachee said Edenvision purchased the land for R5 million and the project will cost an estimated R300 million.

The site is situated at the intersection of Archie Gumede (formerly Newport) and Moses Mabhida roads on the Mason’s Mill site.

Rezoning and planning have led to delays in the construction, but the processes have since been completed.

Dr Padayachee said the project is part of the Greater Edendale Development Initiative project, which aims to stimulate the Edendale economy.

“We are bringing quality health care to those who can afford it in the area.

“About 220 permanent posts for professional staff and some contract workers will be employed.

“The hospital will play a major role in bringing relief to the current shortage of beds in the province for chronic patients,” said Dr Padayachee.

Eden Gardens Private Hospital will be the fifth in Pietermaritzburg after St Anne’s Hospital, Medi-Clinic, Midlands Medical Centre and Daymed Medical Centre, which are all in the city centre and northern suburbs.
