New-look tight five as Sharks seek Griquas revenge

2013-09-13 00:00

THE Sharks are looking to a new-look tight five to lay the platform for Currie Cup victory over Griquas in Kimberley tomorrow.

There are five changes to the starting line-up that played, and lost, to Western Province at Newlands last Saturday and four of them are at tight forward.

The only exception is at scrumhalf where the in-form Charl McLeod takes over from Cobus Reinach.

Pieter-Steph du Toit, after an extended injury break of three months, will join Edwin Hewitt in a new lock pairing, taking over from the injured Marco Wentzel and Peet Marais. Tighthead Wiehahn Herbst and hooker Kyle Cooper start in the front-row, replacing Rayno Gerber and Craig Burden. Loosehead Danie Mienie is the only tight forward to retain his place.

Flyhalf Butch James and inside centre Tim Whitehead, after quiet games at Newlands, are retained.

Griquas’ coach Pote Human has made three changes to his team, including Australian lock Rory Arnold, who this week appealed against a lengthy suspension for biting and was cleared.

“We always believed in Rory’s innocence and that justice would be done,” Human said.

“Now he has been cleared to play and we welcome him back for the Sharks’ game. We know it is going to be tough and we are glad to have him back.”

Arnold comes into the starting line up in place of Patrick O’Brien, who moves to the replacement bench.

Veteran centre JP Nel takes over from the injured Jean Stemmet while Nico Scheepers is on the wing in place of Richard Lawson.
