New more prominent home for Hayfields Blood Donor Clinic

2008-06-04 00:00

June is blood donor month and the Hayfields SA National Blood Services clinic has relocated and staff are encouraging more people to donate.

The new clinic is adjacent to Nedbank in the Hayfields shopping centre.

Head sister Gail Spark thanked loyal donors and said that since Monday’s move to the “shop on the corner”, they have had about 13 donors a day — more than usual.

The aim of World Blood Donor Day, on June 14, is to raise awareness of the need for safe blood transfusions, the importance of blood donation and to thank loyal donors.

Donating blood is a simple procedure that takes only 30 minutes and only 480 ml of blood is extracted using safe and sterile needles.

Once blood is donated, it undergoes testing for HIV, syphilis, Hepatitis B and C to ensure patient safety.

Sipho Roto from the Eastern Cape became a regular donor and motivational speaker after he received 32 units of blood when a tonsil and sinus operation went horribly wrong.

“I am standing on my feet because you sacrificed your time and gift of blood to save my life,” he said.

For more information on how to become a donor, contact the SANBS at 0800 11 9031.
