New on the big screen

2008-02-08 00:00

Opening today in local cinemas are Cloverfield at CineCentre and Ster Kinekor; Into the Wild at Ster Kinekor and Meet the Spartans at CineCentre. Elizabeth: The Golden Age joins the Nu Metro lineup, while Evening comes back at Ster Kinekor. P.S. I Love You, the Hilary Swank and Gerard Butler chick flick, will be showing on Valentine’s Day at CineCentre, where Aaje Nachle is still the Sunday Bollywood film.

Into the Wild is Sean Penn’s fourth film as director and is based on Jon Krakauer’s book. Emile Hirsch plays Christopher McCandless who, after graduating from college, abandons his possessions, rejects his parents’ conservative values and goes walkabout to Alaska to live off the wilderness. It is based on a true story. Reviews have been mixed, some reviewers finding it pretentious, but others being very impressed. Also starring Marcia Gay Harden, William Hurt and Vince Vaughn.

Meet the Spartans, directed by Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer, is a spoof take on the battle of Thermopylae, and last year’s film 300. It parodies the earlier film’s homoeroticism, but by all accounts goes so far over the top that it ends up falling flat on its face. Starring Sean Maguire, Carmen Electra and Ken Davitian.

Matt Reeves directs the sci-fi action monster movie Cloverfield, with Lizzy Caplan, Jessica Lucas and T.J. Miller. In New York city, some hand-held camera footage is discovered after an attack by a mysterious monster which has caused general mayhem and demolition. Reviews suggest that this is genuinely scary, and a successful foray into the monster genre.
