New range of jewellery and art on sale

2009-12-31 00:00

THE African Art Centre is showcasing an exhibition of artworks by the Velobala Group and a new range of beaded and telephone-wire summer jewellery designed by Hlengiwe Dube, Nozipho Zulu, Carmi Course and Liz Mitchell at the gallery at 94 Florida Road, Durban, until the end of January 2010.

The Velobala Group is an African Art Centre development project, which has been running since 1994. It allows young people to explore the different media of drawing, painting, printmaking, mosaics and jewellery making and introduces participants to the world of art making.

And, at the end of each year, an exhibition of artworks by students who were motivated and hardworking throughout the year is mounted at the African Art Centre.

To complement the exhibition, a new range of innovative beaded and telephone-wire jewellery, created by crafters who have been attending development workshops at the African Art Centre throughout the year, is on show.

The workshops aim at developing new skills and techniques, product development and encouraging the production of works of originality and of the highest quality. The designs are based on traditional Zulu beadwork, which is transformed into contemporary fashion jewellery.
