New rates valuation roll ready

2009-02-05 00:00

The revised rates valuation roll for Pietermaritzburg is complete and will be put out for public scrutiny shortly.

Council’s executive committee scrapped the roll done last year following an outcry from residents over anomalies in their property values. The valuations, carried out in preparation for the implementing of the Property Rates Act, are based on the market values.

Yesterday, Trevor Lidgetton of the quality control company Siyazama said they are satisfied that C.B.R. Ellis, the company tasked with compiling the roll, carried out the process thoroughly and that the roll is in keeping with property values in July 2008.

He said there may be some anomalies within suburbs, but they can be corrected during the objection period.

Notices in local newspapers in the next few days will advise ratepayers that the valuation roll is open for inspection and objections. The roll will be placed at the 15 different municipal buildings in the city and suburbs.

A copy will also be available on the council’s website and all ratepayers will receive letters advising them of their valuation as well as a brochure explaining the objection and appeal process.
