New toll fees cause traffic chaos at Mariannhill

2010-03-02 00:00

MOTORISTS are forking out more for toll fees after the South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) announced a price adjustment that came into effect yesterday.

The new tariffs, which were recently approved by Transport Minister Sibusiso Ndebele, will be effective on all toll roads around the country.

At Mariannhill Toll Plaza, fees for a light motor vehicle, which were R7, have increased by 50 cents to R7,50. Motorists passing through Tongaat Toll Plaza will now have to cough up R7 instead of R6,50. Mvoti Toll Plaza has also increased its fee for light motor vehicles by 50 cents.

The increase caused chaos at the Mariannhill Toll Plaza yesterday, as motorists were unaware of the price adjustment and did not have enough money on them. Traffic was backed up for almost an hour as traffic officials tried to control the situation.

Sanral CEO Nazir Alli said toll financing enables government to add capacity that cannot otherwise be funded under current and projected allocations from the fiscus.

He said, “The ‘user-pay principle’ is a constructive means of ensuring the delivery of a well-maintained road infrastructure. Income from the tax base is therefore able to meet other prioritised sectors within the broader South African context.”
