Newborn found abandoned outside mosque

A NEWBORN baby girl has been given a second chance at life after she was found by a caretaker outside the Somerset Park Mosque in Umhlanga on Tuesday morning.

The baby, believed to have been about 24 to 48 hours old, lay abandoned in a blue shopping bag in the early hours of a cold winter’s morning.

When the caretaker of the mosque saw the blue plastic bag moving at about 7.30 am on Tuesday, he decided to investigate.

He recalled noticing a bag when he arrived at 5 am but had thought it was rubbish. Upon closer inspection he discovered that there was a baby inside the bag. He then wrapped her in a blanket and called the Durban North police.

Then advance life support paramedic Gary Paul of Netcare 911 and his colleagues arrived on the scene and said they found a “bitterly cold” baby.

“[The baby] was dehydrated, but cute as a button with her little puffy cheeks. Someone had taken enough care to bathe and clothe her in a white babygro before leaving her outside the mosque,” Paul said.

He suspects that the person had to know that the mosque opens early and that the baby would not be left unattended for too long and would be found by caring people. The baby was then transported to Netcare Umhlanga Hospital where she was carefully examined and fed.

The infant is now housed in a safe haven.

“She is a little miracle baby,” Paul added.
