Newcastle Municipality the ‘greenest’

2013-07-01 00:00

THE Newcastle Municipality has once again been honoured as the greenest municipality in KwaZulu-Natal.

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Agriculture acknowledged municipalities in the province for their initiatives in going green to combat the effects of global warming last week.

Among the urban municipalities, Newcastle was announced as the best and received with prize money of R300 000. uMhlathuze and uMnambithi got second and third respectively, and were awarded trophies.

Last year, Newcastle Municipality was also voted as the best in the province.

Among the rural municipalities, uMhlabuyalingana was the winner, while uMtshezi and Abaqulusi took second and third places respectively. Mooi River received recognition for its recycling initiatives.

The department said in a statement that the awards were in line with the Cop 17 resolution that MEC Meshack Radebe would host the annual provincial greenest municipality awards to champion the green revolution.

The aim of the awards is to encourage municipalities to implement strategies to promote greening methods or exercises that would reduce carbon emissions.

“The awards are a significant vehicle in driving community awareness on waste management issues and creating a positive spirit of competition among provincial municipalities on matters relating to greening and reduction of carbon emission,” said a statement.
