Newcastle hit by huge hailstorm

2009-11-28 00:00

BETWEEN 8 000 to 10 000 homes in the Newcastle Municipality were badly damaged by a hailstorm yesterday morning. The most affected areas are Emadadeni Township’s sections 1, 2 and 4.

Mayor Afzul Rehman said the storm came over the area at about 11.30 am yesterday and lasted for about an hour-and-a-half. Asbestos roofs and windows were broken and some vehicles damaged. Some houses were flooded and furniture damaged, but no injuries were reported.

The mayor said that on his arrival in the areas, people were busy trying to seal huge holes in the roofs and windows of their homes with whatever material they had on hand.

“… on communicating with the area disaster management office, we started organising for plastic sheeting and blankets for the community,” Rehman said.

“At this stage we haven’t settled every family and it can take time because of the huge damage.”

He said senior officials from the provincial disaster management unit were on their way to Newcastle, adding that an assessment of the damage will be done today.
