Newcastle showdown on tracksuits

2013-03-06 00:00

A SHOWDOWN is looming between five Democratic Alliance councillors and the mayor of the Newcastle Municipality.

The procurement and use of a range of municipal sportswear valued at R171 000 lies at the heart of their dispute.

Afzul Rehman, mayor of the Newcastle Municipality, said he will lodge a complaint with the speaker of the municipality against the DA councillors, whom he accuses of undermining the council’s code of conduct.

Imran Keeka, a DA councillor in the municipality, said some procurement procedures were allegedly flouted when the municipality purchased 100 tracksuits valued at R171 000 for the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) games hosted by the municipality in December.

Rehman countered that no one had raised issues about the tracksuits during that period, and the DA councillors also wore them during the games.

After the games, there were various opportunities to raise the matter at meetings, but the opposition members returned the gear three months after receiving and wearing it, said Rehman.

The councillors returned the sports gear on Monday to the municipality, claiming they had never worn it.

The Democratic Alliance councillors denied ever wearing the tracksuits and said they were only made aware of the purchase at an Exco meeting in February this year.
