Newcastle teen sought

POLICE in Bloemfontein are searching for a man who stole the bakkie and kidnapped the teenage son of a Newcastle couple who had helped him.

Police in Newcastle are investigating charges of kidnapping and taking a vehicle without permission after Johannes Renier de Beer (23) disappeared with Marcel Bladin de Chalain (12) on Sunday.

Sick with worry, Marcel’s mother, Adri, on Monday said De Beer had taken the keys to her husband’s bakkie on the pretext that he was taking rubbish to the dump. Marcel went along to show him where the dump was and then they did not return.

She said she had took pity on De Beer, who was living on the streets, and gave him food and shelter. “He said he came from the army base at Harrismith and he had army uniforms in his suitcase. I though I was doing a good deed.” De Beer lived with the couple for a few days before he allegedly kidnapped their child and stole their vehicle. En route De Beer sold tools in Ladysmith to buy diesel. He also drove off with the suitcase of a middle-aged couple to whom he had given a lift.

• Anyone who sees a white Ford Ranger with the registration number NN 44495 or the two missing people is asked to contact the police.
