Newlands dispatched in DCFA cup second round

2014-07-24 00:00

DEFENDING DCFA Premier League champions Newlands FC were bundled out the Fury Ford FA Cup at the weekend.

In the second round of clashes, they were surprisingly beaten on penalties by Division One’s New Germany after a 1-1 draw at full-time.

This was the major upset of the round as most results went according to the form book. Playing at venues in and around Durban, there were some competitive encounters as teams strove to stay in the draw.

With rules stating that penalties would decide the winner if the teams were deadlocked after two 35-minute halves, there were some anxious moments.

In a heavyweight clash involving two Premier League sides, Greenwood Park Friends eliminated Juventus 3-2. Friends are currently the high-fliers in the league, banging in goals left and right. Their recent form has seen them surge to the top of the table.

In the derby of the weekend, Villa Park were up against the Villa Park Reserves and emerged 2-0 victors.

Games and venues in the round of 16 will be announced soon. Fixtures are scheduled for Saturday, August 2.
