Newspaper awards: ‘Witness’ and ‘Weekend Witness’ shortlisted for design prizes

2008-03-06 00:00

The Witness and Weekend Witness have again this year been shortlisted in the prestigious McCall and Joel Mervis competitions respectively.

A total of 17 dailies and 29 weeklies entered this year’s Frewin, McCall and Joel Mervis publishing awards, which are endorsed and managed by the Newspaper Association of SA.

The awards recognise newspaper excellence in printing and design. “The level of craftsmanship has shifted up a gear and there were stunning examples of what has become the ‘classic’ international style of presentation. When you consider how small our reading population is, we can applaud this achievement,” said convenor of judges Clive Loxton.

Sister newspapers also shortlisted include Beeld and Die Burger in the Frewin competition for dailies with a circulation above 50 000, and Volksblad for the McCall competition for dailies with a circulation of 50 000 or less.

The Joel Mervis competition recognises weekly newspapers.

The winners will be announced at the Mondi Shanduka Newspaper Awards ceremony on April 9.
