Newspaper truck overturns, but avoids rear-ending other vehicles

A TRUCK driver and his passenger were seriously injured when their vehicle, carrying a load of newspaper, overturned on the Peter Brown Drive bridge yesterday morning, blocking traffic from Montrose.

The truck was travelling southbound on the N3 highway when its brakes failed. The driver swerved the vehicle on to the off-ramp to avoid rear ending other vehicles. He managed to steer the vehicle into Peter Brown Drive, but he lost control of the truck and overturned on the bridge.

Newspaper bundles were strewn across the bridge, completely obstructing the flow of traffic from Montrose towards Pietermaritzburg CBD.

Netcare 911 spokesman Jeff Wicks said both the driver and the passenger sustained possible head and neck injuries. They were both treated on the scene before they were taken to hospital.

In another accident, a man was injured when his car overturned on the N3 near Durban yesterday morning. Paramedics found the man lying unconscious and covered with porridge, inside the overturned vehicle in the middle of the highway. It is believed that the driver lost control of the vehicle and it crashed up a steep embankment before rolling back on to the highway.

Wicks said the driver had sustained head and spinal trauma. He was rushed to RK Khan hospital in Chatsworth where he is in a serious but stable condition.
