Next Easter rugby festival at Pukke

2010-04-08 00:00

MOST of the major rugby-playing schools in the country have been involved in one of the festivals that have been held over the past two weeks.

There were a handful of schools with good rugby names that were not involved and some of those will be playing from today until Monday at the Pukke (North West University) School Rugby Festival.

Of the schools that did well in 2009, only Boland Landbou and Bishops have not been at one of these festivals. Bishops is presently on tour in Italy where, in their first three games, they have scored over 170 points. Boland Landbou will be playing in Potchefstroom.

The other schools are a mixture of top rugby-playing schools and others, mainly from North West, who will measure themselves against the strong schools.

It is strange, however, that there are four schools who played in one of the Festivals over Easter and, after just two days rest, will be playing another three matches. Glenwood and Upington both played at the Kearsney Festival, Outeniqua at the St Johns Festival and Eldoraigne at the KES Festival. Framesby, who have had a week’s rest since the Grey HS Festival in Port Elizabeth, are also represented.

Glenwood, a team that was particularly hard-hit with injuries, will be using a number of youngsters as replacements in this festival and hopefully they will come through unscathed. Their first two games are tough encounters against Framesby and then Outeniqua, both of whom have large forwards.

It will be interesting to watch Harmony, a rugby academy associated with the Harmony Gold Mine in Welkom in the Free State.

They are usually fleet-footed, but do not have much size and will likely struggle in the tight phases, but will throw the ball around when they do win clean ball.

Their biggest test will be against Eldoraigne.
