Next stop Cape town: Sherpa man pedals for peace

2012-08-31 00:00

THE Sherpa community of Nepal is famous for helping extreme mountaineers to summit Mount Everest, which their country shares with China.

However, Furtemba Sherpa, whom The Witness spotted cycling through Hilton on Wednesday, hasn’t yet made the climb.

“I think I’d like to do it when I get back home,” he said, having clocked up about 90 000 km on his bike across 87 countries since 2003. “I come from an area of Nepal that is around 3 000 metres.”

Well before his Everest pursuit, he intends heading cycle to Cape Town from KwaZulu-Natal via Lesotho, spreading his message of world peace and the need to protect the environment.

He flies the flag of Nepal on his handlebars, along with that of whatever country he’s pedalling through, and Lord Buddha’s peace flag.

“Before I started my trip I thought people in different countries would be very different,” he said. “Now I know their beautiful hearts are all the same.”

The 35-year-old said he had had all sorts of experiences during his trip around the world. “But I focus only on the good ones.”
