Nice work if you can get it

HOW much would you pay for cleaning a non-functioning and locked public toilet?

The uMngeni Municipality pays R50 000 a year for a member of staff whose entire job is to clean the public toilet in Nottingham Road. The problem? The toilet has been locked for more than a year because the municipality removed the tank supplying the water.

This came to light in a recent uMngeni Exco meeting when DA member Pam Passmoor asked how it was possible it had been cleaned 50 times in the first quarter of the 09/10 financial year when it was locked.

The general manager of corporate services, Sandile Buthelezi, agreed it was true that the toilet was not in use, but he added the outside was being cleaned and an inspection would reveal that the outside was perfect.
