Night cricket set to light up local club scene

2008-11-13 00:00

THERE is an extra-special flavour to club cricket this weekend with the first round of the much-anticipated KFC Inland 20/20 Series taking place tonight at the Varsity Oval at Peter Booysen Sports Park off Golf Road.

Kentucky Fried Chicken has come on board in what is a huge boost to club cricket, a neglected facet of the game in terms of sponsorship in an age where the vitally important grassroots level of sport is overshadowed by the major events.

Kelvin Abrahams of the sponsors also plays cricket for a local club, the Woodlands-based Lancashire, and it is gratifying to see a company supporting such an event and an individual taking the initiative to put something back into the game.

There is also a welcome incentive for players and teams in the tier below Premier League level to strut their stuff, and Varsity second XI — they play Ladysmith-based K&L in today’s 4 pm opener — are joined by promising Imbali-based Masibemunye to test their skills against the best KZN Inland has to offer.

The Varsity first XI tackle Lancashire in the 7 pm bash and an evening’s family entertainment under the stars is the likely outcome.

The DJ is set to spin some great music to add to the festivities and Garry Hampson of hosts Varsity has advised that food and refreshments will be on sale. Hampson requested that no alcohol is to be brought to the venue, as the bar will be open.

Sunday sees the Premier League back with the top match between Zingari and champions Varsity.

FIXTURES

Tonight — KFC 20/20 Series: Varsity II vs K&L (4 pm), Varsity I vs Lancashire (7pm)

Sunday — KZN Inland Premier League: Zingari vs Varsity (Collegians); Northern Districts vs Midlands (Newcastle); K&L vs Lancashire (Ladysmith); Orientals vs Young Natalians (Khan Road).
