Night racing in Karkloof Classic

2014-05-08 00:00

WHILE thousands of riders will enjoy the single track carved through the countryside on Sunday’s Sappi Karkloof Classic Marathon races, the hugely popular mountain bike event will be preceded by two unique races, and their course designer Hylton Turvey is urging MTB lovers to turn their handlebars to the discipline of Enduro racing and the unusual appeal of the MTB racing at night.

The Sappi Karkloof Classic MTB Festival starts tomorrow night with the novel 20 km Peri Night Race, in which riders need headlamps to navigate through the forest, with the STIHL Karkloof Enduro on Saturday afternoon set to also attract a large number of recreational riders.

Turvey prepared the tracks through the Sappi plantations that will be used by the various races in the Karkloof this weekend.

He is an avid Enduro rider and feels that the minor events, like the Night Race and the Enduro, have a lot to offer riders.

For Enduro enthusiast Hylton Frost the social element is key in the racing.

“You can ride up the hills at your own pace chatting to your mates and then take on the descents at your own speed.”

He also likes the fact the Enduro races rarely suffer bunched up groups as the field quickly spreads out.

“Having to wait behind people becomes quite a problem in some races but during the Enduro it isn’t an issue and it is as much a race against the other riders and your mates as it is against yourself as you descend and have the chance to meet up with your mates on the next climb,” he said.

Fair weather is predicted for most of the event with a beautiful night race tomorrow.
