Nine badly injured in head-on collision

NINE people are in a serious condition while another nine sustained minor to moderate injuries after a head-on collision this afternoon on the N3 Pietermaritzburg-bound just after the Hammarsdale off-ramp.

“ER24 paramedics arrived on the scene to find two bakkies in the north- bound lane of the freeway about 10 metres away from each other,” said spokesman Derrick Banks.

Four patients were found on the northbound lane and 14 others were found on the southbound carriageway. The fire department used the jaws of life to free the driver of a Ford bakkie.

The nine patients, who included the drivers of both vehicles, were treated for serious injuries and taken to Life Entabeni Hospital, Pietermaritzburg Medi-Clinic and RK Khan Hospital in Chatsworth.

The collision is thought to have occured after the driver of an Isuzu bakkie travelling towards Durban lost control and collided with the roadside barrier before crossing into the northbound lane, said Banks, adding that all the patients were thrown from the bakkie.

Traffic was severely disrupted due to the accident.
