Nkandla man held for muti killing of boy (8)

AN Nkandla man who police say has confessed to slitting the throat of an eight-year-old boy appeared in the Nkandla Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

Spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane confirmed that Phakamani Ngxongo (28) was arrested on Tuesday and charged with murder.

Zwane said Andiswa Nxumalo was reported missing at the Nkandla police station on September 29. He went missing after being taken by a man known in the area.

“The boy never came back and his parents became worried and reported him missing. After Ngxongo confessed, he led us to the shallow grave where the boy was buried,” said Zwane.

Phumzile Nxumalo, who lived with the victim, told The Witness that the boy disappeared after he went to close the kraal for the cows on Saturday afternoon.

“We got worried and went to look for him at the neighbours and were told that he went with a known man to buy cigarettes.”

Nxumalo said a traditional healer in the area, Hlabayakhe Ndima, said a man came to his home looking for “tools to sharpen his weapons on the night of the murder”.

Speaking to The Witness yesterday, Ndima said: “The suspect came here with a child, but I told them to go home.”

He said Ngxongo had stayed with him for a few months before the incident while he was performing Amagobongo, but left after the ceremony and returned to his family.

Amagobongo is a ceremony in which one’s ancestors are called on to see if one has the spirit to be a sangoma.

Zwane said the motive for the killing is still unknown and the case has been postponed to October 9.
